Our code for primary care

As our patients live longer and with more complex health needs than ever, the scope of primary care has grown to help us rise to the challenge.

Our goal is to help patients stay in their own homes for as long as possible because we know this is not only better for their physical health, particularly if they are elderly, but also their mental wellbeing. Hospital is reserved as somewhere patients only go when absolutely necessary.

To help us achieve our aims, GPs now work alongside practice and district nurses, social services, children’s services, pharmacists, mental health and third sector specialists to provide holistic, one-stop health care.

GP practices have also formed local clusters of practices and other services to ensure they can remain sustainable and easy to access.

Swansea Bay UHB works closely with the local authority and third sector partners to help meet the wider challenges facing the NHS and continue to provide the best possible health service in times of need.

Our employees

The health board employs around 12,500 staff, making Swansea Bay UHB one of the biggest healthcare groups in the UK.

Primary care independent contractors play an essential role, and the health board regularly employ contract GPs, opticians, pharmacists and dentists across the area.

As one of our doctors, you would join a team of clinical leaders who are working together to help deliver our ambition of becoming a world-leading healthcare provider, while always going above and beyond to meet the needs of our community.

Training and development

Our health board understand that supporting education, research and innovation across all practices is the best way to improve the overall health of our communities. That’s why Swansea Bay UHB is committed to providing professional training and development opportunities for all employees.

As part of the Welsh Government recruitment campaign ‘This is Wales – TrainWorkLive’ doctors training in Wales can choose from dozens of flexible, high-quality speciality training programmes and receive excellent ongoing support.

Training is delivered through a combination of work-based training and e-learning, providing employees with the most up-to-date skills and knowledge, and ensuring that patients receive the highest quality treatment in every setting.

All healthcare training now comes under Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW), a single body to support the development of the health workforce.

Innovation and research

Swansea Bay UHB have ambitious plans to become recognised world-leaders in training, innovation, research, skills and healthcare.

In pursuit of this goal, we are proud to be members of the Association of UK University Hospitals, as well as loyal partners of the Swansea University Medical School, ranked third best in the UK by the Complete University Guide 2018.

We are also part of A Regional Collaboration for Health (ARCH) – a unique collaboration project with Hywel Dda University Health Board and Swansea University, aimed at improving the health, wealth and wellbeing of South West Wales.
